5 Benefits of CEREC Dentistry

Posted on: May 7, 2019

CEREC technology makes it possible for people who need dental prosthetics to get them after a single visit to the dentist. The traditional process of getting dental prosthetics like crowns can be quite tiresome. It requires at least two visits to the dentist and the use of a sometimes messy mold to take an impression of the patient's mouth.

CEREC is the acronym for Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic. It involves taking high definition images of the patient's mouth and using that information to project how a prosthetic will fit on the tooth. It can take as little as 15 minutes for CEREC equipment to make a dental prosthetic.

Advantages of CEREC

There are a handful of benefits that CEREC has over the traditional way of making dental prosthetics in a laboratory. These include:

1. Eliminates the need for plaster fittings

There is no need to wait weeks for plaster fittings when CEREC is available. This technology makes it possible for the dentist to enter the patient's information into a computer and create a crown in as little as 15 minutes.

2. Prosthetics fit better

CEREC takes microscopic pictures of the patient's teeth, and that allows for very precise impressions. This information is entered into the milling station by the dentist and the equipment creates the prosthetic to a high degree of precision.

3. No messy molds

People who have a strong gag reflex will appreciate the fact that CEREC does not involve using messy molds to make an impression of the patient's mouth. Some people have a hard time having to bit down on strange tasting goo.

4. Prosthetics are made with ceramic

The ceramic that is used to make prosthetics with CEREC is less likely to crack due to its ability to expand and contract naturally with the wearer's teeth. These ceramics have the translucent properties of real teeth, so they look and feel natural to the patient. Prosthetics made from CEREC are very durable.

4. No toxic metals are used

Metals like mercury are not used to make CEREC dental prosthetics. These metals can sometimes be found in prosthetics that are made with other materials besides ceramics.

5. Prosthetic is installed the same day

This is certainly the biggest benefit that comes with CEREC. Having to visit a dentist multiple times to have a prosthetic installed does not only waste time, but it also means the patient will not have their smile restored for a few weeks.

With CEREC, the dental issue that brought the patient to the clinic is fixed before the person leaves the clinic. They are free to move on with their lives and leave the problem behind.
