Root canals are procedures used to treat inflamed or infected soft tissues and nerves inside of the teeth, also called “pulp.” Inflammation and infection can be caused by tooth decay or a chip or crack forming on the tooth exposing the pulp to the elements. If inflammation and infection is left untreated, you may experience severe pain or an abscess may form and cause further issues.
You may need a root canal if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Sensitivity to heat or cold
- Discoloring of the tooth
In order to confirm a root canal is necessary, the doctor will need to x-ray the tooth and pulp. During the root canal procedure, the infected or inflamed pulp and nerve is removed in order to save the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned, filled and sealed. A crown is then used on the tooth in order to seal it and protect it from any further infections. This procedure usually takes two appointments to complete. If you are in need of a root canal, please feel free to contact our office and make an appointment today!
