Cavities are very common. According to the Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, nearly 90% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 had decay in their teeth. Metal amalgam fillings used to be the norm, but they don’t blend in with the surrounding tooth structure. What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings repair tooth structure that has been damaged by decay. They also help to keep the compromised tooth healthy going forward. This reduces the probability of tooth decay occurring again in that area. Tooth-colored fillings are crafted from composite resin. This is a putty-like mixture that can be colored and sculpted to match the surrounding tooth structure. Tooth-colored fillings don’t contain any metal, making them completely free of mercury. No one will even be able to tell that you’ve had a filling placed.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Tooth-colored fillings can usually be placed in just a single appointment. First, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, they will remove any decayed and damaged portions of the tooth to sanitize it.

Once your tooth has been prepared, your dentist will apply tooth-colored composite resin to your tooth in layers. This is done until all of the lost tooth enamel is restored. The composite resin is hardened using a curing light.
